These interconnecting dolls have become a symbol of Russia, and few visitors leave without acquiring one, yet their origins are actually strongly linked to Japan. Sergey Malyutin, a crafts painter, designed the doll in an attempt to make a long-lasting Russian doll. Many believe he was inspired by the Japanese Daruma doll, which he studied and discovered held a doll within a doll, and so on. This certainly inspired him, and thus the first Matryoshka doll was born in 1890.
