Nan was able to put her experience in context thanks to the vast amount of information on humpback whales that had been accumulated.
In 2016, research collated over 115 documented incidents of humpback whales actively working to save their offspring, dating back over 60 years, as well as members of other species such as dolphins and seals.
Nonetheless, Nan’s case was exceptional.
